Legacies of War Job Announcement: Chief of Mission Advancement

Legacies of War is excited to announce that we are expanding and looking for the very first Chief of Mission Advancement to join our dynamic team!

Legacies of War is the only international organization based in Washington, D.C. solely focused on advocating for the removal of unexploded bombs in Laos left over from the Vietnam War era. The mission of Legacies of War is to raise awareness about the history of the bombing in Laos and advocate for the clearance of unexploded bombs, to provide space for healing the wounds of war, and to create greater hope for a future of peace. The organization uses art, culture, education, community organizing and dialogue to bring people together and create healing and transformation out of the wreckage of war. Legacies of War, a fiscally sponsored project of NEO Philanthropy, Inc (NEO), produces big results with a small, nimble staff.

The Chief of Mission Advancement (CMA) is the hub for strategic partnerships and operations-maestro problem solver and creative whiz, responsible for meeting fundraising and strategic partnership goals and outcomes in progressing our mission. The CMA is responsible for the organization’s daily administrative functions and fundraising activities. Administrative duties include financial reporting, relationship management and outreach, information management, and office management. Development duties include creating and executing the annual fundraising plan in coordination with the Executive Director, board members and other relevant staff and volunteers. The CMA also provides ongoing support for event planning, and undertakes projects/tasks as assigned. The CMA reports directly to Legacies of War’s Executive Director, and is an employee of NEO.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational and Strategic Development – Collaborate with the Executive Director and Chief of Staff to monitor and execute overall development strategies including foundation, corporate, and grassroots fundraising. Oversee and execute donor engagement strategy to promote renewal and growth. Conduct research to expand prospective funding sources.

Lam Vong Circle: Legacies’ exclusive recurring giving circle where donors have the option to give at a starting level of $10 per quarterly, monthly or yearly.

Young Professional Council: The successful candidate will have the opportunity to co-create Legacies’ inaugural young professional program. This group will focus on creating fundraising and awareness campaigns from various regions of the US and around the world.

In partnership with ED or COS:

Sponsorships of Legacies of War’s Initiatives: Recruitment and coordination of sponsorships for programs including Thip Khao Talks and Legacies’ Library (new!)

Cause Marketing Campaigns: Assist with cause marketing campaigns including Trailblazer partnership with Article 22.

Events: Serve as the lead staff for both Legacies’ events as well as staff point of contact for third party events benefiting Legacies.

Relationship Management – Maintain lists of funders, stakeholders, and partners with whom the Executive Director wants regular contact, and tee up communications or arrange meetings to support ongoing relationship building.

Operations  – In coordination with NEO’s accounting team, track and submit credit card reporting, expense reporting and reimbursement, and monitor monthly financial reports.

Information Management – Monitor and maintain Legacies of War’s Salesforce database and coordinate electronic filing systems.

Events and Meetings – Provide logistical support for community and fundraising events, as well as in-person board meetings with the assistance of interns.

Additional Responsibilities – Identify and troubleshoot conflicts and ensure assignment follow-up. Work with other Legacies of War’s staff, board members and volunteers in support of Legacies of War’s overall mission, and other duties as directed by the Executive Director.

 

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years’ experience in a nonprofit, entrepreneurial environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the following:

  • Exceptionally detail-oriented and accountable, with strong organizational skills and the ability to produce finished products
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • A highly self-motivated work style and the flexibility and willingness to take on additional projects when needed
  • Ability to work proactively in an ambiguous and dynamic small organization
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Comprehensive computer skills including calendaring, word processing, and using spreadsheet and database software
  • Experience troubleshooting computers, software, and networks
  • Well-rounded interpersonal skills with the capacity to work effectively alone and in a team environment
  • Strong ethics and personal integrity
  • A professional attitude and client-service orientation
  • A track record as an outcome-driven self-starter

The following is ideal but not required:

  • Experience with Salesforce and accounting software
  • Experience with fundraising and marketing
  • A passion for and commitment to working in the field of international development
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of bookkeeping
  • Experience working with volunteers and nonprofits 

Compensation

NEO Philanthropy / Legacies of War provides competitive compensation and an attractive benefits package that includes a performance bonus based on individual and organization success, health care coverage, and a 401(k) plan with an employer matching contribution policy.

Starting Salary is $50,000.
