NHK World: “Unexploded US cluster bombs causing serious problems in Vietnam, Laos”

The foreign ministers of Japan and Laos have agreed to urge more countries to sign the treaty to ban cluster bombs. Cluster bombs scatter hundreds of smaller munitions with high killing power, and leave behind many unexploded bomblets. Many unexploded bombs dropped by the United States during the Vietnam War remain in Laos, causing serious problems. Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada ended a 2-day visit to Laos on Sunday. He told Laotian Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith that Japan attaches importance to the first meeting of signatories of the Convention on Cluster Munitions to be held in Laos in November. He said Japan will send a high-level delegation.

BBC One: “Victoria Wood appeals on behalf of the Mines Advisory Group (MAG)”

Victoria Wood travels to Laos and discovers how the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is working to reduce the threat of unexploded weapons in war torn communities. Most of us have heard of the Vietnam war in which the US military attempted to stop the spread of communism throughout parts of South East Asia. What’s less well known is the White House also staged a covert war in neighbouring Laos- a war so secret that even congress didn’t know. During the 9 year conflict Laos became one of the most bombed countries in history and its legacy continues to threaten the lives of the people who live there today.
