Merced is located in the San Joaquin Valley and is home to the University of California-Merced. A sizable number of Southeast Asian farmers have resettled there. In 1997, author Annie Fadiman’s book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures was published. In her work, Fadiman documents the hardships of the Lees, a Hmong refugee family from Sainyabuli Province, Laos, and their experience with the health care system in Merced.
Why this City?
Merced has large Hmong, Lao, and Mien populations, and is one of the first places where Hmong and Lao refugees resettled after the Vietnam War.
